If you are confident in your tax knowledge then cheap tax software for tax preparers will be fine. If not paying extra for guidance might be worth it.

MemberSeptember 16, 2025 at 1:04 pm in reply to: Best Tax Software for Small BusinessI have seen people spend money on software but never use half the features. It makes sense to start with something smaller and upgrade later if your business grows. Overbuying just leaves you with a bloated system that doesn’t really serve your needs.

MemberSeptember 15, 2025 at 3:49 pm in reply to: Best Tax Software for Tax PreparersI once went with a really low-cost option, but it ended up crashing right in the middle of filing season. That experience taught me an important lesson. Client data and peace of mind are far too valuable to risk just for the sake of saving a few dollars.

I like that H&R Block has both online and in-person options. Sometimes i start online but then feel stuck so it is nice to know i can just book an appointment if needed.
-
I actually prefer filing with H&R Block online because i can walk into their office if i get stuck. That backup option is really nice. The online version itself is pretty easy to navigate. It’s a nice hybrid system.

Not gonna lie i was nervous about messing something up but the system basically held my hand through the process. It even caught a couple of mistakes i made. Felt like a safety net the whole time.

The best service for me is one that saves me time. I don’t mind paying a little extra if i don’t have to stress over every little form. That’s why i usually just hand everything to a professional and let them deal with it.

Best doesn’t always mean cheapest. I once paid extra for a professional service, but they found deductions that saved me way more than the fee. That experience made me rethink what value really means.

For anyone with freelance or side gig income i would recommend looking at software that specializes in self employment. TurboTax Self-Employed was helpful for me though it wasn’t cheap.

My parents still mail in their taxes because they don’t trust technology. I set mine up online and it’s a breeze. It’s funny how it’s really a generational preference sometimes.
-
Last year was the first time i hired a tax preparer and they found deductions i had no clue about. That alone made the fee worth it. I realized there is value in having someone who knows the system better than i do.

If you are considering them make sure to ask for a clear contract. I have heard stories where people signed up thinking they’d get full representation but it turned out to be limited help. Transparency is everything here.
-
Something else to think about is whether they explain what happens if you don’t qualify for the special programs. A good company will tell you what your backup options are even if it means something as simple as setting up a payment plan directly with the IRS.

I used a tax relief service about 3 years ago. They didn’t cut my debt by half like the commercials suggest but they did negotiate a lower monthly payment with the IRS. Honestly that made life a lot easier.

They came across as very pushy when I spoke with them. I didn’t like the sales tactics so i went with a local tax attorney instead.
