Best Tax Software for Individuals
I gave Credit Karma Tax a shot a while back and it actually worked really well. Totally free and it covered my student loan interest deduction. It is worth trying if you do not want to spend money.

TurboTax feels like the most user-friendly option to me. Even when i had freelance income it explained everything clearly. The downside is that the cost adds up quickly if you need extra forms.

I think the free versions are fine if you only have a W-2. Once you add kids, a mortgage or investments I would recommend upgrading to a paid program. The deductions and credits can really make a difference.

I tried H&R Block online and it was solid but i felt like it pushed me toward add-ons more than i expected. Still the interface was smooth and i trusted the calculations. Not bad overall.

FreeTaxUSA has been my go to. It is affordable, simple and it does not try to constantly upsell me. If you do not have a complicated return i think it is one of the best choices out there.

In my opinion the best online tax software is the one that saves time and keeps things simple. TurboTax costs more but it is quick and very accurate. For me avoiding errors matters more than cutting a few dollars in cost.

I feel like it really comes down to your situation. If you are single with no kids most free software options can handle everything just fine. Once you add dependents, deductions or investments it makes more sense to pay for a more advanced platform. That has been my experience.

I had a bad experience with one free software that did not save my info properly. Since then i stick with TurboTax even if it costs more. Losing progress when you are halfway through is not worth the frustration.
